Wintering over in Mission, Texas since Dec 1, 2016 and departed this am for San Antonio, Texas for the next 4 days. Mission Texas had both pros and cons for the both of us. We met some fantastic people from Canada and the States. Doris met Simone who had a lot of the same interest that she had, such as exercise. They both participated in Power Walking and Yoga. The maintenance and housekeeping crew were retirees and good people. We most likely will not do work camping again, for it takes away from being fully free like pure retirement presents. The food in the Rio Grande Valley is some of the best to be had. We signed up at a local gym to workout to maintain our weight. While the food was good, it mainly was not what you would call healthy food. A lot of fried and everything was served in excess. Prices for everything was low. The area has an abundance in everything! Cons were poor air quality, wind, dramatic swings in the weather, reckless drivers in mass, and the temptation to eat, eat, and eat.
We made 5 trips to Progresso, Mexico. The Mexican people were very respectful and we did not feel paranoid about being there. Progresso Mexico is probably the safest southern border town around. Everything is cheap, close to being free!
Visited the Virgin de San Juan Mission and walked through the mission and its grounds. A lot of history and art. It was a very interesting and beautiful place.
Took a trip to South Padre Island and Brownsville, Texas. Went to Brownsville to see my old ship, the USS Saratoga. The Saratoga was decommissioned a couple years ago and sold to a company for scrap. It was very sad to see the ship in the condition of complete disarray. We could not get real close because it was in a high security area of the Port of Brownsville. After a disappointing visit to the ship, we headed to South Padre Island and spent a couple of hours there checking it out followed by a nice lunch.
